I’ve seen Carey show up to games and
practices in so much pain, at times he was barely able to speak.
But for Carey, his players always come first, and no sacrifice
or hardship is too great to bear for his kids. Blessed with a
wonderful sense of humour and a bountiful supply of humanity,
Carey sometimes wonders if he’s really making a meaningful
contribution to the team —during those moments when he ponders
the limitations of his illness. But it is clear to everyone who
knows him, for those who have had the privilege to play for him
and those who have had the pleasure to coach with him, that
Carey’s contributions are immeasurable. I have seen the lasting,
positive effects even his simplest talks have on his players.
And I have seen the looks of love, admiration and respect he
garners from all his boys. Carey is the most inspirational,
courageous and dedicated person I know. Hopefully, his example
has made me a better coach, a better role model and a better
person.

Watching Carey coach these boys for 4
years was one of the most remarkable things. On top of teaching
the boys how to be incredible players on the baseball field, he
also instills in them outstanding morals and values that they
can take with them off the field. What is remarkable is the fact
that Carey does all of this while battling a very difficult
disease. Rain or shine Carey is at every practice, every game,
and every meeting. Part of the joy of having a family member
play on the NDG Lynx is the fact that you get to join the NDG
Lynx family. Although my brother does not play with the NDG Lynx
due to his age, my family is still in touch with every player,
every family, and every coach, especially Carey. I am honored to
know Carey Ashton and will always remember him no matter where
life takes me. -- Thank you Carey for everything you have done
for these boys, especially Jack.

Carey is an inspiration to everyone at the
games; kids, parents, officials, fans and opponents alike. His
lesson to the young people he coaches is invaluable and one they
will carry with them forever. He teaches them that obstacles can
be overcome when you are determined, that love of the game is
more important than physical dominance and that when you carry
yourself with respect and dignity, you earn the same back a
hundred times over. These are values that will not only shape
the kids' next season, but have an effect on every endeavour and
challenge they meet.

I have no doubt that each player’s life
has been changed in the very best way because of Carey. He
tought them the true meaning of determination and courage! Carey
Ashton has my vote a million times over as coach of a lifetime!
